Digital Portfolio Demonstration- 2023/ Batch 2021-23

 Digital Portfolio-2023

On 16th March 2023, Department of English Organised digital portfolio demonstration of semester 4 students. The aim of creating the Digital portfolio is to integrate one's all creative or critical works and achievements(academic or Extra-curricular) on one platform. So here I am sharing my perspectives of Digital Portfolio demonstration.

What is a Digital Portfolio?

A Digital Portfolio, also known as Electronic Portfolio or e-Portfolio, is a tool that collects the set of content, documents, works, presentations and others with the aim of presenting the best work of an individual or organisation, presented in digital format or we can say a collection of electronic evidence assembled and managed by a user, usually on the Web. Such electronic evidence may include input text, electronic files, images, multimedia, blog entries, and hyperlinks. In this way, it is presented as a grouping of digital content that works as a presentation. It is an element that is becoming enormously popular in the digital world due to its ease of being shared on the internet, both by social networks, web pages and email.

Digital Portfolio Demonstration at the Department of English, MKBU

I have been attending the Digital Portfolio Demonstration for two years. Last year during bachelors, I attended the Portfolio Demonstration and this time as a student of the department itself. Both the time I have learnt so many things together like how demonstrate our academic as well as personal achievements and activities as well how one can develop a sense of looking -at literature with literature.

Today's Digital Portfolio demonstration was divided in three parts:

1. The first round was about Reviewing Digital Portfolios. This round started with the introductory session by Dilip Barad sir about the brief introduction of what is Digital Portfolio and Why Digital Portfolio is important for a student or as an academician. And then Students were asked to show the best part of their Portfolio and explain why that is the best part of their presentation. This was a live session so I am putting the video here...

After completion of the first session platform was open for all, where semester 2 students and teachers and students from various colleges visited Digital Portfolios of sem 4 students. This session was very much interesting as all the students explained their vision towards looking at literature as well shown and what is there in their portfolio. Each visitor had to give their feedback through filling up google form which is based on various criterias. As I have said earlier, it was very much interesting because of the collaboration of lifetime achievements and activities of an individual student.

2. In the Second session students were asked to explain the Metaphor that they have given to literature and How literature shaped them, where we got different metaphors for literature and looked at literature. This session was also going live and I am putting that video here...

After completion of the second session also sem 2 students had interaction with Digital Portfolio Demonstrators.

3. The Third and final session was about the concluding remarks given by Dr. Dilip Barad sir about how students have prepared and demonstrated their portfolios. At the end of this session, Certificates for Digital Portfolio was distributed by sir to all the sem 4 students.

My Observations

Last time when I came to the department for the portfolio, I was unaware of manythings like key-concepts of preparing a Digital Portfolio and what are the objectives of it as told by Dilip Barad sir "Digital Portfolio is not made to just a show off but rather it has a vision where student can reflect their ideas related to literature, how the journey of studying literature has shaped a student and their achievements in academic as well as extra curricular activities."  Each student of the department has to first reflect how studying literature has shaped them and give a metaphor to Literature. Last time, as per my observation(if I am not wrong), metaphors which were given by students were very common like Sea, Fish, Water, Ship, Tree, Sky etc. But this time I have found a variety of metaphors which are taken from different fields like Medical, Technology, Technical tools, Schooling, Architecture, etc. Metaphors given by students are...

  • Amena Rangwala- Window
  • Bhavana Sosa - Tree
  • Dhruvita Dhameliya- Umbrella
  • Dhvani Rajyaguru- Kidney
  • Divya Parmar - Drown view
  • Divya Sheta - Algorithm
  • Emisha Ravani - Kaleidoscope
  • Himanshi Parmar- Universe
  • Hinaba Sarvaiya- Dairy
  • Hirva Pandya- Mirror
  • Janvi Nakum- Sky
  • Jheel Barad-  School/Schooling
  • Khushboo Makwana- Map
  • Mayuri Pandya- Microscope
  • Nehalba Gohil - Joker
  • Nidhi Dave- Elephant
  • Nilay Rathod- Matrix
  • Nirav Amreliya- Space
  • Vachhalata Joshi- Labyrinth

Students have not just only given the metaphor but also explained very well how these metaphors can be compared to literature. Giving metaphor to literature gives us a new vision or we can say our own vision by looking at literature which we have been connected to for five years. Another major aspect in Digital Portfolio is that each student has to reflect their ideas on how literature has shaped them. We were given a task by Barad sir on the very first day at the department to write a page or two on what is literature according to you and after completing the Master's journey they are again asked the same question. So there is a huge difference between what is written on the first day of M.A. and on the edge to complete M.A.

Demonstration of the journey: academic as well as personal:

I have observed that all the students have demonstrated their academic as well as extra curricular works and achievements in their respective sites. Sir time and again tells us to collect all the achievements as work since childhood or when you first did something better or achieved something. They Included

Academic details, Performance and Achievements:

  • Classification of literary work according to genre(BA and MA)
  • Marksheets and Certificates
  • Youtube Videos
  • Blogs
  • Slideshare
  • Their performance in G-Class, Presentation, Assignments

Other achievements:

  • Participation in various competitions and other activities

Creative Corner:

Their Art: Painting, Singing, Editing, Photography, Mehdi, Graphic design

Feedback/Parameters of evaluating Digital Portfolio:

The feedback form was based on ten parametres, which are,

1. Integrative thinking - Integrative thinking is the ability and habit to recognize relationships among ideas and experiences that are not routinely thought of as related.

2. Reflective thinking- Reflective thinking is the ability and habit of looking back at previous learning and setting those experiences in a new context created by subsequent learning.

3. Thinking in Community- Thinking in Community is the ability and habit of seeking connections between your learning and the learning of others in the class / community.

4. Thinking in context- Thinking in context is the ability and habit of seeking connections between what you learned in college and relating those connections to subjects, debate and discussion in the wider world.

5. Demonstration of academic journey- (Are all assignments, presentations, videos etc. displayed on DP?

6. Professional Brand - Keeping a portfolio also helps you reflect about that 'professional brand' ... in other words it can be a tool for self-reflection. In that sense it is not used to simply 'show off'.

7. Digital Citizenship- Digital portfolios allow for practising digital citizenship, get Googled, share quality projects for college entrance, provide authentic connections outside the classroom, show understanding etc.

8. Self Learning- Portfolios help students develop a sense of belonging and to own their learning.

9. The most important value of a digital portfolio is the intrinsic boost to a student's self-confidence. They can clearly see their own accomplishments. That self-confidence is a key to the student's future success. How far is it achieved by the student?

10. Digital literacy & Web presence: It is imperative that in 2023, students be able to curate, archive and expand on the work they are producing in class. Today’s education m10ust help students authentically learn important digital citizenship lessons. Education requires students to internalise the core subject as well as vital digital literacy skills such as creating their own digital web presence and learning to effectively and purposefully share their learning with the world. (Holly Clark). It is imperative that in 2023, students be able to curate, archive and expand on the work they are producing in class. Today’s education must help students authentically learn important digital citizenship lessons. Education requires students to internalise the core subject as well as vital digital literacy skills such as creating their own digital web presence and learning.

All these parameters demonstrate why a digital portfolio is necessary.

To conclude, I would say that the core aim of making the portfolio is to display what we are and how we are. At the end I would like to congratulate sem 4 students for preparing and demonstrating their e-portfolios in such an excellent way

Special thanks to Dilip Barad sir for always leaning us towards new ways of exploring ourselves...

Thanks for visiting...
