      Long answer of the poem" The character of happy life" by Henry Wotton



Introduction of poet:- 

            Henry Wotton was born on 30 March, 1568 in England and died on December,1639 in Eton,U.K. He was an English poet,Author,Diplomat and Politician.



Introduction of poem:-

                    This great poem has been written by "Henry Wotton". This poem focuses on the man who is free from everything and who enjoys life with simple way of living. That man is happy and contented from his life. There is a beautiful message for all of us in this poem that we should obey God and we should be good with others. So that we can be happy and contented from our lives.

            Sir Henry Wotton wrote the poem from experience; for he was a distinguished servant of the crown who had seen for himself the rise and fall of ambitious men. This poem has 6 stanzas.

             From the poem, we get the idea that the poet describes the character of happy life. Through the poem, the poet declares that a person who has freedom of will and thought leads a happy life. That person does not act according to other people's wishes. His only weapon is his simplicity. This type of man is not a slave of his desires. He is always prepared for death. This man is not interested in being famous or has no care about what people say about him in public or privately. This upright man is not jealous of chance or foul play. He has the true idea that flattery gives deepest wounds. He does not abide by the rules of the society which compel a person to do unwanted deeds.

                Poet is of the view that such man has born happy and has been taught to be happy to be happy in every situation. He faces the the problems of life happily and confidently. He serves his own will and his will is always serves others. Whatever he wants to do,he do it manfully. He does not need any armor to fight for truth. His only armor is his honest thoughts.

              In the next Stanza,the poet says that a happy man is the master of his desires and passion. He has a control over his desires and longings. He is not afraid of death,so He is always prepared to face it. By using the lines,
    
"Whose passions  not his masters are;
Whose soul is still prepar'd for death."

              The poet is of the view that a happy man does not beg to anyone for the things he needs. He only prays to God for this things. He has strong faith in God. He doesn't expect gift from God in return for the services he provides to his creatures; instead he just expects his mercy and his favour.

            In the last Stanza, the poet says that the happy man is not bound of anything or he is not tied with anything.

"This man is free from servile bands
Of hope to rise or fear to fall;
Lord of himself, thought not of lands;
And having nothing, yet hath all"

                  Through this lines, he says  he is free to do whatever he wants to do. He does not work to raise his status or for fear of a decrease in his status. He is free from such a things. He is the master of himself and does not own land and properties. He is only owner of himself and even having nothing ownership, he has everything with him. He is the richest man in the world beca He is happy.

Themes:-

               In this poem, poet described a life and character of happy man, who can truly be called a happy man. He has given man's happiness as the central idea by a sharp sense of contrast between the uneasy life of an ambitious man and contented life of man. so , Happiness, peaceful Virtue and Contented life; this three elements are the theme of this poem.

Rhyming Scheme:-
                                 
            This poem has six stanzas and regular couplet rhyme. The poet has used regular rhyme scheme of  ABABCDCD.

Conclusion:-
                       
            Thus, the poet described the characteristics of a noble and happy man, who is honest, simple and also not be slave of his desires.
