Raat Rani

     Raat Rani

This blog is written in response to the thinking activity to understand Independence through the lens of the first episode of the web series 'Modern Love Mumbai' , "Raat Rani" assigned by Vaidehi ma'am, department of English, MKBU.

As a part of studying post-independent Indian English literature, Vaidehi madam came up with the discussion that before understanding post independence literature, it is essential to understand the meaning of independence. Ma’am passed us a question: what is the meaning of independence according to us? So we all first came up with numerous ways of looking at independence, like Gender based freedom, different perspectives in terms of independence which varies from one person to other and even within there is always a changing state of the ideas of Independence. Many times it may be possible that  Liberty or independence turns to licentiousness. But the concept of independence always varies from individual as well as mass. This discussion brought us so many insights of what individuals think about independence.

To enhance our understanding of independence, Vaidehi madam organised a screening of the first season of the web series titled 'Modern Love Mumbai' “Rat Rani” Which also talks about the same. This episode is the story of Lali, a cook and her husband Lutfi, a Security Guard. It has that notion of what is independence of a woman as well as a person.

Generally I have found some of the frames and symbols which directly indicate dominance as well as patriarchy which has been cherished when the central female character crosses the over bridge by bicycle. Over bridge is the symbol that comes up many times. As per my interpretation, the bridge is the height and a kind of dominance that at first seems quite impossible to cross and when she does it, she feels like she has done the task which was the toughest one and this can be related to her married life as well. Now let’s discuss some questions raised by ma'am and try to justify it.

List down the contradictory symbols you observed in the episode “Raat Rani”.

In 'Rata Rani' there are some symbols which are quite contradictory. Let’s understand all these symbols through the frames of the episode:

In the initial frame, we witness a contradictory state of society. Lali, a woman, is depicted as dominating her husband, Lutfi.

 Ice-cream:-

In this frame, Lali is shown breaking up with her husband. However, the symbol of love, the Taj Mahal, is set behind them. This contrast raises questions about why these two opposing elements are placed together. Now lets take another contradictory symbol from the same frame but adding another one.

In the first scene, we discover a significant change in Lali's behavior. Previously, she had a habit of sharing ice cream with her husband, like two spoons and one cup. However, in the first frame, we witness a notable shift in Lali's actions as she indulges in ice cream alone, without extending the customary invitation to her husband. This transformation in Lali's behavior signifies a profound shift in her character.  Now Let’s take three other frames to support this  argument.

Following Lutfi's departure, Lali experiences a profound sense of longing and misses him deeply. This sentiment becomes evident when she observes a family enjoying ice cream together, triggering a poignant reminder of Lutfi's absence. . However, as Lali crosses the bridge and continues on her journey, a remarkable transformation takes place. She begins to relish the simple pleasure of eating ice cream alone, signifying a newfound ability to enjoy her own company and move beyond the longing for someone who is no longer a part of her life. This particular frame beautifully captures Lali's journey of self-discovery and the growth she undergoes along the way.

In the wake of her husband's departure, Lali embarks on a bold venture by starting her Raat Rani Kava business. This decision demonstrates her courage and determination, as she becomes the only woman among numerous men in the same industry. This choice symbolizes the inner strength Lali has gained through her experience of crossing the bridge. It signifies her ability to step out of her comfort zone, face challenges head-on, and defy societal expectations. Lali's decision to enter a male-dominated field showcases her resilience and willingness to break barriers, inspiring others with her fearlessness and determination.

 Broken Ceilings:-

In society, it is traditionally believed that it is a man's duty to take care of the home and provide shade ("Chhat") to the rest of the family. However, in this episode, Lali is the one who repairs the "Chhat" instead of her husband. This symbol challenges the notion that only men are capable of such tasks and suggests that women can also take charge.

Which is your favorite symbol from Raat Rani? Why?

 Flyover

The flyover is a prominent and meaningful symbol throughout the episode "Raat Rani," appearing frequently from the beginning to the end. It holds a special significance for Lali, representing her journey of courage and the breaking of societal stereotypes.

Lali finds inspiration and strength in the flyover, viewing it as a symbol of her own bravery. It becomes a metaphorical bridge that she must cross to overcome challenges and achieve personal growth. Despite her initial struggles, Lali perseveres, determined to conquer the flyover. When she finally succeeds, a sense of jubilation fills her heart, and she proudly shares her accomplishment with others, proclaiming that she has crossed the flyover.

The flyover represents much more than a physical bridge for Lali. It becomes a powerful symbol of her courage to find happiness and independence without relying on her husband. Towards the end of the episode, she firmly tells her husband not to return home, signaling her newfound strength and willingness to assert her own desires.

In essence, the flyover embodies Lali's transformation, her ability to break free from societal expectations, and her emergence as a strong, self-assured individual. It serves as a testament to her courage and resilience, symbolizing the liberation she finds by embracing her own happiness and forging her own path.

Which is your favorite frame from the episode? Why?

The whole episode is one of my favourite and thus all the frames since Lali’s struggle to her conquest. But if have to talk about one particular frame, than i will show the below one:

In our lives, we all encounter challenges and face suppression, especially as women. It is essential to continuously strive to overcome these obstacles. This notion deeply resonates with me and serves as a tremendous source of inspiration. Lali exemplifies this mindset as she courageously steps out of her comfort zone, determined to conquer the hurdles in her life. With unwavering courage, she fearlessly crosses the metaphorical flyover, ultimately realizing that she is capable of achieving anything she desires. Instead of dwelling on outcomes and succumbing to tears, it is vital to embrace courage as a driving force to overcome challenges. By doing so, we empower ourselves to triumph over any adversity that comes our way.

Compare and write a note on all the women characters from Raat Rani.

In the episode, each female character possesses distinct perspectives and approaches towards life and relationships, setting them apart from one another. Among them, Lali stands out as a unique individual.

When Lali enters the house where she is serving, she witnesses a quarrel between a man and a woman. The woman initially emphasizes the importance of her sleep, highlighting her personal needs. However, she later expresses her frustration, mentioning that she can no longer adhere to a strict diet and maintain her physique solely for her husband's sake. She then requests Lali to prepare something like Paratha, implying a desire for indulgence.

Another woman appears multiple times throughout the episode, observing Lali's actions without actively participating in the unfolding events.

Lali, on the other hand, stands apart from the other female characters due to her courage and determination. She possesses the strength to pursue her own desires and take action accordingly. Lali's choices and decisions reflect her ability to live life on her own terms, setting her apart from societal expectations and norms.

“Courage is Contagious” – Give an example for this from the episode

The entire episode of 'Raat Rani' revolves around the idea that "Courage is Contagious." Lali serves as an inspiration for others, encouraging them to face the difficulties in their lives with courage. After her husband abandons her, Lali encounters numerous challenges. The collapse of her home's ceiling presents the biggest hurdle, requiring her to find the funds and initiate repairs all on her own. Despite the absence of her husband, Lali manages to navigate through these obstacles.

As she crosses the flyover, a sense of accomplishment washes over Lali, signifying her triumph over the challenges she has faced. Empowered by her resilience, she embarks on a new business venture, selling Kava, becoming the only woman in a male-dominated industry. During a conversation with a lady she serves Kava to, Lali shares insights about the Raat Rani flower, which holds significance considering the episode's title.

And she shows her the flower of Ratrani. The flower of Ratrani and the life of Lali are altogether the same. When her husband left her, it doesn’t mean she will break down but she perseveres and continues to do remarkable work.

Lali takes it upon herself to repair the broken ceilings of her home. In a pivotal moment, she confronts her husband and refuses to share ice cream with him, symbolizing a drastic change and her newfound courage. She ultimately breaks free from the relationship, symbolized by the statue of Liberty standing alongside Lali, representing her freedom.

As Lali crosses the flyover once again after the breakup, she utters powerful words:

Not Allowed!

Not Allowed!

Two Wheeler Not Allowed!

Lalzari (Lali) colloge जाना Not Allowed!

रात को बाहर निकलना Not Allowed!

प्यार करना Not Allowed!

Law Cast की लड़की से प्यार करना तो बिल्कुल Not Allowed!

और जब उसने छोड़ दिया तो खुश रहना Not Allowed!

और क्या क्या Not Allowed है??!!!!

These words of Lali indicate that everything is not allowed but what we do is of more importance not what the societal rules says.

Share a picture of yours with a woman who is your source of courage. Give a creative title to it.
